Treatment of Dehydration

Why choose Hydralyte?

Hydralyte is scientifically formulated to contain the correct balance of glucose and electrolytes for rapid rehydration. The formulation is based on the World Health Organisation criteria for effective rehydration.

Water or sugary drinks are not as effective as Hydralyte, as they do not restore lost electrolytes (which retain the fluid).

Why not use flat Lemonade?

Water or sugary drinks (such as cordial, flat lemonade and sports drinks) are not as effective as Hydralyte, as they do not restore lost electrolytes (which help retain the fluid).

Indeed it’s a myth to consume sugary drinks when you’re suffering from vomiting and diarrhoea as the excess glucose can impede the hydration process.

How long to use Hydralyte

Continue to use Hydralyte while vomiting and/or diarrhoea persist and while symptoms of dehydration are present.

When to offer Food

Once you or your child is tolerating significant fluids by mouth, a more solid diet can be offered. Avoid sweet, fatty and spicy foods.

If hungry, try starchy food such as rice, potatoes, bread, cooked cereals and dry biscuits.
